Skylight Cleaning in San Diego: The Glass Everyone Forgets

Nine times out of ten, the brown shadow spreading across a San Diego skylight is not a leak. It is eight months of dust, pollen, and ash sitting on glass that nothing ever rinses. Skylight cleaning is the one part of a window job homeowners here almost never think to ask for — right up until the first rain turns that dust into mud streaks and the whole room goes dim.

The short version

  • Three completely different problems look identical from your couch. Only one of them is a cleaning job.
  • Skylights sit nearly flat, so they collect everything vertical windows shed. Nothing self-cleans up there.
  • Clean them before the rains, not after. The first rain makes a dusty skylight look dramatically worse.
  • Fogging between the panes is a failed seal. No cleaner on earth reaches it — do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Who this is for

San Diego homeowners with skylights, solar tubes, or a two-story stairwell with glass nobody has touched since the house was built. Especially the coastal and canyon-adjacent homes where marine layer, dust, and fall ash all land on the same flat pane. Our crews are up on ladders in these neighborhoods every week, and skylights are the single most common thing we get asked about only after we are already on site.

The three things it could be

From below, they all read as “the skylight looks dirty or stained.” They are not the same problem and they do not have the same fix. Figuring out which one you have is genuinely the whole decision.

What you see What it usually is Who fixes it
Even grey or brown haze, worse at the edges, streaky after rain Dust, pollen, ash and mineral spotting on the outside of the glass Window cleaning — this is the one we do
Milky fog or a cloudy patch that never wipes away, sometimes with visible moisture A failed seal between the panes of a dual-pane unit Glass replacement — the space is sealed, nobody can clean inside it
A defined wet mark, discoloured drywall, or staining on the shaft walls Water intrusion at the flashing or curb A licensed roofer — and sooner rather than later
Dust, cobwebs and insects collecting in the well The interior shaft, which nothing reaches either Window cleaning, interior side

We would rather tell you on the phone that what you are describing sounds like a seal failure or a flashing issue than show up, clean it beautifully, and have you standing in the same room with the same stain. That call takes two minutes and saves everyone a wasted trip.

Why San Diego skylights get bad faster than you would think

Vertical glass has gravity on its side. Dust slides, rain sheets down and carries some of it away, and the pane gets a partial rinse every storm. A skylight sits at somewhere between flat and gently pitched, which means everything that lands stays. Add our water — San Diego runs roughly 13 grains per gallon, which is genuinely hard — and any moisture that does arrive evaporates in place and leaves its minerals behind.

Then there is the season we are in right now. Fire season here peaks September through November, and fine ash settles flat. A vertical window sheds most of it. A skylight holds all of it. The same goes for the dust that Santa Ana conditions push across the county on a dry October afternoon.

So the layer builds all summer, undisturbed, and the first real rain does not wash it off. It wets it, moves it a few inches, and dries it into streaks. That is why so many people call us in November convinced something suddenly went wrong with their skylight. Nothing went wrong in November. It went wrong in August and the rain just made it visible.

The safety part, said plainly

Please do not climb onto your roof to do this yourself, and if you do go up for any other reason, never step on or near a skylight. Older acrylic domes and unmarked panels are not walking surfaces, they fail without warning, and falls through skylights kill people every year. This is the one piece of DIY advice in our whole blog that we give without any hedging.

Most skylights can be reached safely from a properly set ladder and a water-fed pole from the eave, or worked from the roof edge with the right footing — which is what our crews do. If yours genuinely cannot be reached that way, that is worth knowing before anyone is standing on your roof.

What it costs and how often

Skylights are priced by access, not by pane, which is why you will not see a flat number on a rate sheet. A reachable single-story skylight added to a window job is usually a modest add-on. A high, steep, or awkwardly placed unit takes real setup and prices accordingly. For the general shape of window cleaning pricing in this market, we broke that down in what window cleaning costs in San Diego.

On timing, once a year is enough for most homes if you pick the right once. Twice suits canyon lots, heavy tree cover, and anything within a few blocks of the water. We covered the reasoning behind intervals generally in how often you should clean your windows here — skylights follow the same logic, just with less margin for skipping a year.

If you are booking a pre-rain visit anyway, the two things worth adding alongside the skylights are tracks and sills, which is where the grit actually collects, and the screens. Those three are the parts of a window that the rain exposes rather than cleans.

The honest limits

Some skylights will not come back all the way, and you should hear that before you book rather than after.

Older acrylic domes yellow and craze from years of UV. That is the material itself degrading, not a film on top of it, and cleaning does not reverse it. Glass that has sat under hard-water spotting for years can be etched, meaning the minerals have bitten into the surface — for the broader version of that story, see hard water stains on San Diego windows. And fogging between the panes is a sealed-unit failure that no cleaning reaches, at any price, by anyone.

We will tell you which of those you are looking at when we get eyes on it. What we will not do is take money for a result we cannot deliver.

Frequently asked questions

Is my stained skylight leaking?

Usually not. Exterior soiling is far more common and shows as an even haze that changes with the light. A true leak leaves a defined wet mark, often with discolouration on the shaft walls or ceiling around the opening. If you are seeing that, call a roofer before you call us.

Can you clean a skylight from inside only?

We can clean the interior pane and the shaft, and it does help with dust and cobwebs. But the layer that is actually dimming the room is almost always on the outside, so interior-only work rarely produces the result people are picturing.

When is the best time of year to do this in San Diego?

Late September through November, before sustained rain. You clear a full season of dust and ash off before the weather arrives, instead of watching it streak across the glass afterward.

Do solar tubes need the same thing?

Yes, and they show it faster. A tubular skylight’s whole job is funnelling light through a small dome, so a thin layer of grime costs a noticeable amount of brightness.

Get the skylights done before the rain does it badly.

Pricing guidance in this article is general market information, not a quote. We cannot guarantee restoration of etched glass, removal of UV degradation or crazing from acrylic domes, or clearing of moisture and fogging between the panes of a failed sealed unit — those conditions require glass or unit replacement. We do not perform roofing, flashing, or water-intrusion repair; suspected leaks should be referred to a licensed roofing contractor.
